Derated wind turbine
with grid limitations

Challenge

In accordance with local requirements, we had to supply and install a wind turbine rated at a maximum output of 250kW output on a 55-meter high tower for repowering purposes in Northern Ireland. A maintenance package was part of it to assure long-term service life.

Approach

Making use of a second-hand wind turbine is key to providing the best business case for installations in this capacity range. Maximizing the rotor diameter provides the highest output, therefore we sourced and inspected a Vestas V52 wind turbine in The Netherlands with good service history, arranged the dismantling of the wind turbine (in one crane day), refurbished the wind turbine and re-installed it on site in the UK.

Solution

The new owner of the wind turbine now gets maximum output from the available grid connection, with a rotor of 52 meters rated at 250kW resulting into approximately 1.000 MWh annually. Moreover, we have re-used a 15-year old wind turbine, minimizing carbon footprint and resources.
